A lesson on freedom
I think I was 7 years when I asked my parents for a pet bird. As I stated that I was always passionate about birds, my parents did not find my demand unusual. So they promised to get me one as soon as it was possible. I wanted a humming bird. I learnt about it in school and wanted to own it. My parents just nodded their heads whenever I spoke about it, and I always was engaged in animated conversations on owning a pet bird.
It was September, my favorite month since my birthday happens to be in that month. One day I was pulled out of bed, dressed up and taken on a long drive to a hill. As I stepped out of the car, I just heard chirps and nothing more. I saw birds flying here and there, all having fun. I gazed and gazed, learnt a lot about new birds and clicked few pictures.
As we were returning back home, my parents asked me what I liked about birds. I said their body, chirping sound and also their flight. I exclaimed that it would be wonderful if we humans could also fly. My mom just asked,” Darling, don’t you think you owning a pet bird will rob it the chance to fly, be with its family?” I just remained silent, for I began to realize the truth.
That day I learnt a big lesson, the beauty of birds is not in the cages but it is in their freedom, the freedom to fly and be happy.
